This was one of my favorite assignments this term. We were asked to make a graphic for a movie of our choice, in the style of (the amazing) Saul Bass. It was hard to decide which movie to do, but I went with this design for Wong Kar-Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love.’ Great movie- check it out!

One of our final assignments at school was to illustrate a story that our class wrote. I wanted to have some fun and celebrate the end of the school year. So, I made a cake for my illustration, inserted it into a painted diorama, and photographed it. Eating it during the final crit was well worth the effort.

Calling a spade a spade

Recently, in my typography class, we created a deck of cards as a group. I was assigned the ten of spades and the design for the back of the cards.

For the ten of spades, I went with a ‘creatures-of-the-deep’ theme:

…The pressure was on for designing the back of the cards, because I couldn’t let the class down! I went with a toast theme, because I thought this is the one thing that united us all. I drew the preliminary design in peanut butter and jam, and digitally layered toast, knifes, and ‘jam type’ on top. This is one of my first attempts at a digital work, which I do not have training in *yet*, but it was a fun time.

Main & Hastings tribute

Here is a quick (unrefined) typography experiment I did as a tribute to the intersection of Main & Hastings in Vancouver. I have spent much time waiting for the bus to school at this infamous intersection. So much so that I feel like a part of the culture down there. I know all of the ‘regulars’, and have many war stories.

I just can’t get over this guy… here is a sketchy drawing of CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein. If you haven’t visited stopthemeter.ca, to sign the usage-based billing petition, go now! If you already have visited the site, why not visit it again and write another letter to Mr. von Finckenstein?

As I am sure many of my fellow Canadians are aware, we are currently facing a hot debate over usage-based billing for the internet. It is a crazy proposition, and it may actually happen!! I am extremely dismayed over the entire thing, as I could elaborate on in great detail with you over a drink sometime…. If you have not signed the petition or heard about this issue, VISIT stopthemeter.ca ASAP!!

So, when I received an assignment at school to do a constructivist-style protest poster, of course I chose this as my topic. Here is my take on it:

The poster features a beautiful photo of CRTC Chair, Konrad von Finckenstein, wearing his dunce cap… and piercing Canada’s access to so many things. You may see this one on a pole near you– I am strongly considering posting them around town.
